At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?
They have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.
Goodreads- Good Choice Award Winner 2013-Best Middlegrade Childrens Fiction.
I love the world that Rick Riordan has created. The book is one of my favorites that he has done for our charecters like Percy and Annabeth. While this book won the award for Middlegrade/ Childrens fiction in 2013 I, as a 20 year old found it captivating. It is one of his darker, heavier books. Probably because of the plot his charecters go through. Percy and Annabeth are stuck, having fallen into Tartarus at the end of the last book, The Mark of Athena. In this next book Percy and Annabeth have to navigate the depths of Tartarus a route no demi-god has ever had to do. They find and old frenemy, Iapetus, Titan Lord of the West or now as he goes by Bob. In the book The Sword of Hades, part of The Demi Godfiles, Percy and Iapetus are fighting and fall into the River Lethe, wiping his memory. Now going by Bob as Percy named him he helps his little demi-god friends taking them to see various people on thier journey including: Akhlys (The goddess of Poison and Misery) who shouds them in a disguise called the death mist, and Night or Nix who chases them though her kingdom.
Meanwhile on the Argo II Jason, Hazel, Piper, Leo and Frank have their own issues. They travel through Belogna, to Venice where Frank does some impressive fighting against posioness cows and gets an A+ from Mars. Thanks Dad. They continue and are one thier way to Greece when they get put off course to Croatia. Jason and Nico go off the Argo II to face Cupid and get back, Diocletian's scepter. We as readers learn why Nico is always running. Why he doesn't feel like he belongs. Cause he is GAY! I love Rick Riordon even more for doing this. Not many writers that I have read have gay charecters. Let's teach these kids young that loving who you love is totally okay :)
Khione shows up again and sends Leo of to Ogygia. Where he and Calypso slowly falls for each other. SO MUCH LOVE :) :) He vows on the River Styx to return to her. Whick I really hope he doesn't live to regret.
Oh and Hedge and Mellie got married and she is stuck at Camp Half-Blood and she is pregnant! Even Hedge is happy!!
If you can't tell I really like this one. It has been so much fun to get through. I love all of the mythology and how thought out Riodan's writing is. I am so excited for the last book in this series.
