![]() To My Scripturients, I want you to know that whatever project you are working on. Whatever art you are trying to create. Whatever you are passionate about. You can create it, there will be people that will appricieate it. It is worth it. I want to take a few moments as the hours wind down before The Frituals goes live, to reflect on the last year. On September 23rd of last year I posted a thesis update to my youtube channel. I made the video at 11:45 at night. I was stressed, tired, mentally drained, and wasn't feeling very creative. I had decided to scrap my original thesis project and to write something new. I wasn't really happy making the change, but I wasn't happy with what I had written. That was the theme for my senior year. I was creating work I wasn't happy with. I promised myself when I was done with my thesis I could work on whatever projects I wanted. They would be mine, and I didn't have to let other people's feedback change my ideas. I had been considering self publishing for about a year at this point. I had been researching the publishing industry and what it was like to be a writer outside of school since my sophomore year of college (Shout out to the Creative Penn, Authortube, and The Dead Robots Society for giving me a good foundation.) So with that decision made, I knew I needed to start to create. So I turned back to my first full length novel. The Frituals, then called Cabineral Lake. I had started and stopped this story since 9th grade. Having written bits and pieces of the tale for years, and being in the same world as both parts of my thesis kept, and trashed, I felt I was ready. I formated and ordered a proof and the week before Christmas it arrived. Since December I have felt the highest of highs and the lowest of lows as a creative. I have hated and loved my work. Gone through the stages of grief over it. But with the support of a great group of friends and a loving and growing community The Frituals has come together. I really couldn't have done it without you. Even if all you did was like the instagram posts or if you were one of my regular commentators on youtube. You helped fuel me. Thank you. Making this book has been one of the hardest, most rewarding, and happiest things I have ever done. I am sure I am going to cry tomorrow. I am sure I am going to cry on Thursday at the Launch party. To be able to say that I have created this book, this piece of art, this product that people can buy. That people have bought and that are already enjoying or read in its various stages is mind blowing. I set a goal to publish this book by 2020. And man I smashed this goal. If you told me a year ago when I cried in the basement of Wells' Library about my thesis, that just 364 day later I would be publishing my first book. I probably would have cursed you out and cried harder. Because I am a wimp. But this wimp wrote a book. And so far, everyone has absolutely loved it. Please pick up a copy if you wanna give it a try. I would really appreciate it. Book 2 is in it's outlining stages slowly. Since Ethan won't let me work on it for a few more weeks :P but you can find out the title and a excerpt at the end of book 1. I love you all and thank you for helping a little nerd's dreams come true. ![]() A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses) by Sarah J. Maas Hardcover, 705 pages Published May 2nd 2017 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens Amazon | Barnes and Noble | Book Depository | Goodreads Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's manoeuvrings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit - and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well. As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords - and hunt for allies in unexpected places. In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all. My Thoughts: I will try to make this as non- spoilery as I can though as it is a third book in a series I don’t quite know how that will work. This book was masterful in its own way. That being said it took me a really long time to read it. It took me about a month to get through. This was partially because I was quite busy with work and I didn’t want to read it fast, but also it defiantly felt to me at least like this last book was three separate books. I think this was because each time I put it down for a few days it was right around a new part of the book. This thought could also have occurred to me because there are just SO many details in this book. While the book was a whopping 705 page book that we all had no problems reading, I feel like it could have been split into two longer books in order to give some of the scenes the extra time it deserved. Since some of the scenes felt a bit clipped to me. Not in the sense were it didn’t do it do it justice, but more that it was rushed. I felt very rushed in this book compared to the others. It was partially due to these scenes but also the freaking war that was starting/ about to happen. This war is another reason I feel like the book should have been split in half. I really enjoy reading books where a war takes place, particularly a fantastical war. And I feel like Maas really captured the high a stakes of war really well. She didn’t just through her readers in as she eased Feyre into war she eased us in, using the supporting characters to well support us as we learned what the fighting style of each of the characters was like and to see them in their own element. (I will get back to the characters in a bit) I wanted to see more scenes like the war counsel. I wanted to learn even more about the different courts and how they are all interconnected. I wanted to see how they think. How they appreciate, or don’t, Feyre being the first High Lady. Maybe in the spin off? ![]() Let’s talk about the characters a bit. Particularly they differences in the characters we are finally seeing. While I am new to Maas’s writing I have read other reviews etc. that have mentioned the lack of diversity in her previous books. But in this last book we got a taste of it. Helion the High Lord of the Summer Court is described as a dark skinned fae who wears gold and is whom Feyre received her ability to glow from. But not only is Helion a dark skinned character, but he is bi- sexual, who likes to joke about having sex with Az, Cass, and Mor. I don’t know about you but I got a sort of genie (Broadway Genie) vibe from him? It was weird. Another character we learned about was Mor! I’m sorry for the ones who haven’t read the book but this spoiler must drop. Oh my lord did this make me excited, but this was another scene I wanted to be extended or to be touched on at a later time. It is relieved that Mor is actually gay, and that is why she has been keeping the males at length. She has sex from time to time with men, like Hellion to just sort of keep them at bay. But in the 500 years she has know Cassian, and Az she has not been able to tell them that she prefers females. I am really, really intrigued to see where this goes. There is much more I could talk about but that will have to wait until you read it. I want to say I give the book… a 4 ¾ star rating. I wasn’t a huge fan with the ending, it seemed to neat and tidy. Though maybe in the next few books we will see that it wasn’t so neat and clean. The other reason is as I said before, it felt rushed and I wanted to have those genuine moments with the characters. If you are of an age to deal with sex, and some blood and gore, and have read the other two books in the series my recommendation is go get the damn book right now. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore. From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before. My ThoughtsOH MY GOD... This book was so good. I don't know how to formulate my thoughts right now. This book. This book was sooooo good. I sort of regret putting it off for so long. But I feel like that happens to a lot of people. I blame this on that synopsis. So I want to bring you around to the synopsis that Stiefvater wrote after the book was published:
A host of co-dependent teens with a battery of psychological issues comb rural Virginia for a dead Welsh king with dubious magical powers. Trees talk; hitmen put down roots; dead people live; living people die. Cars are described in loving detail. Fuckweasel. A house full of psychics tells everybody the future and drinks a lot on-page considering it’s a young adult series. Nobody kisses anybody, which is weird because everybody loves everybody. There’s rich boys! Poor boys! Sad boys! Angry boys! Raven boys! Collect them all! This description much better suits the books. These characters are so flawed but so lovable. they make decisions that you hate, but can back. It pulls at your heart strings and makes you want to scream at the characters. It is perfect. One of the things that I loved about it the most was honestly how missleading the synopsis is, because since you go in thinking it is more of a romance the desire to follow the mythology, and the paranormal elements were surprising but pleasing. Stiefvater, created such vivid scenes that I actually got creeped out at time, got chills. If you have read it, Noah, the scene with Noah I read that as I went to bed... so creepy! It was great! I would suggest this book to so many people, but know there are heavy themes in it. Including: Poverty, verbal and physical abuse, death, and a possible hint at suicide. But I feel like these theme were approached well and in a believable way. I feel like because of these themes it leans to the higher end of the YA range, but not anything I am opposed to. The thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon--the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn't just lost, it has fallen into enemy hands. If Magnus Chase and his friends can't retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer's return is the gods' worst enemy, Loki--and the price he wants is very high. My Thoughts: Okay so first things first. I need to be completely honest here and say I haven't actually finished the book. But Katelyn how can you read a book you haven't finished yet? Well you see here. I had the audio book rented. I had 30 minutes left of the recording. I looked at a friends copy. I had 30 pages left. Soooo I don't know the exact ending but I do feel like I know enough to know that this book was great. It took me a while to get through it, trying to physically read it a few weeks ago, but I devoured it in audio book format. One of my favorite things about this book, about Riordan's books are that they are so open. Like in the previous book Sam is an Islamic character and we see more of her Islamic religion coming though the text in a way that shows the peace and beauty of it. We also meet a new character, Alex a gender fluid and trans character who is confident with herself/his self and their decisions. I could see how it could be really beneficial for people that had never encountered it before. When we met her I got so excited. Now on to the plot, this one was a bit slow at first, but the build up was so worth it. This one was an emotional roller coaster that kept you guessing as to what was happening. This one would be five stars if only for the amount of time it took me to read it. But it was defensively one of the best books so far emotionally for me. It felt like the month of March went by so fast, but also so slow. So this month I wanted to read, Wicked, and the Series of the Mortal Nicholas Flamel Series. I did that... well I didn't read Wicked. I have no idea where Wicked is right now. Truth be told I didn't even look for it. I read 5 books this month, and my average for the month was 3.8 stars. That would be because of a one star DNF. My April TBR will be posted tomorrow on my Youtube Channel at roughly 11am. This book spends the time entirely in Paris, a place I have never been but I felt so settled into the city. (This book is one of the reasons I need to visit Paris. Someone please take me!) The descriptions in this book really made it work for me. My biggest pet peeve with this book was Josh. He felt so, so whiny to me in this book just because he didn't have his powers yet. Please stop whining you are fine. I love the fight scenes in this book, so much magic and fighting. I don't really have much to say on this one honestly. This is my least favorite book in the series, but because we mainly focus on whiny, whiny Josh. Again, we had the bad ass fighting women, with Scatty and Joan of Arc. My Thoughts: The Alchemist is the first book in the series "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel." In just two weeks time I get to meet Michael Scott the author of this series. So I wanted to do a reread before I went and met him. because of course I want to have his work fresh in my mind. I gave this first book in the series a five star rating. The first book in this series is so great. I love it because Scott doesn't hold back. He throws you right into the world but as the twins Josh, and Sophie learn about the magic world within ours we do as well. It is a series that is so interesting if you know mythology but, Scott writes in a way that if you didn't know any mythology you would be totally fine. One of my favorite parts of this book and the series in general is how strong the female characters. Granted some of the characters are based off of strong women from history and mythology, but I believe that they are written in a way that they are inspiring to all who read them. I know I have always wanted to be like Scatty. She always seemed like such a badass. And I have to admit I am partial to Joan. (I found out that she is actually now St. Joan of Arc the paton saint of France; martyrs; captives; military personnel; people ridiculed for their piety; prisoners; soldiers, women who have served in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service); and Women's Army Corps. None of these apply to me but she is still the one I chose for confirmation.) This book keeps you going, I duel read as a physical book as well as an audio book and I finished it in little over a day! I am currently snowed in, with a hyper puppy and some crazy siblings. However, I am happy to say that I made it through my second draft, as you could probably guess by the title. But after a long day of editing I made it through. I see a few things I need to think about before working on those chapters. I didn't really add too many new words, I am still hovering just over 50k words, but it's okay. Maybe the next time around I will add more. For right now, I am not worried about it. For now I am going to print this new manuscript, get a bit cup of tea and really start preping for camp nanowrimo. But in the meantimeI have started writing the second book as you know for nanowrimo and feel much better about the writing of the second book. I have to fix this. That is where you come in. I am looking for some beta readers! I would like some 8-10 freinds to help me with this writing project. If you are a person who: 1. likes to read fantasy YA 2.have done some prior beta reading or reviewing 3. Have strong but constructive opinions. 4. Are willing to answer questions about the text every few chapters 5. Are willing to engage in conversation about chapters after completing them. 6. "Everyone has the chance to choose to be good" Shauna Flynn tells her ex-fiancé after she has to run from her home. Shauna and her sister Taytra came of age this year, which means it is time for them to be tested to see if they are a fritual. A descendant of a powerful elf able to control the elements. My Thoughts: I really tried with this book I did. But I couldn't get through it. I was given the book by Fabi Ghittoni on February 23, and I was really excited to read it. If you go to Ghittoni's instagram you see the beautiful cover everywhere. The cover design and interior design are amazing however I could not let that deter my opinion. So this story made me think of Narnia with the transpatation back and forth between a magical realm and Cambridge. I feel like I would have really enjoyed this more if I had a better grounding in the world, however we only saw bare bones details, or what we did were so repetitive I wanted to snap my phone. I never want to see the words "High arching" or "Lofting ceilings" again. I found the redundencies to grate on my nerves so much I had to keep putting the book down. One thing that I may have just grwn accustom to, but I found it hard to get past. There was no internal voice. I realize I only read 70 pages of the book, however, we only saw the charecter's thoughts once. Once! If you were transported to another world, and were told all these unbeliveable things you would be freaking out, nothing. The character really hated this character but she just said she did. I didn't really believe why they did? I never know what Prudance thought! It made it sooooo hard to get into it. Of what I read I felt like if it had a lot more editing it would have been really good so sadly I had to give this one a low rating. I hope in the future we can see better work form Ghittoni. ![]() About the Author: Fabi Ghittoni is an Argentina-based attorney and writer. I got home late last night after driving fives and a half ours back and forth to NYC in a day and a half. I slept eleven hours! But I do have a review for you late or not! Side note. Always befriend your professors. Thanks Becca for letting me sleep lol. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake Hardcover, 398 pages 8 Hours Audiobook Published September 20th 2016 by HarperTeen 5 stars Synopsis When kingdom come, there will be one. In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions. But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown. My Thoughts As said above I give this one 5 stars. I honestly found it so fascinating. The concept of the world while cruel, kept me enthralled. I wanted to know what would happen to these queens. I wanted to know who would die, or if they would die at all! Blake wrote it in such a way that I don't know who I should route for. I don't want any of the queens to die. I like them all for certain qualities. Having read other peoples reviews I have seen that many people didn't like the beginning because they felt it was slow or hard to get into, or their were to many characters. Honestly this is why I thought it was so perfect! I wanted to get to know each of our queens in question and each of their courts. That is just what Blake did. Setting up the world so that we may understand exactly would happen and who to trust, or not to. I loved how dark and complex this was. I also enjoy series like this, if you also enjoy this and don't mind the bits of romance. Mainly very, very, stupid men. You will really enjoy this book. ![]() So here I sit waiting for September 19th 2017 when One Dark Throne, the sequal is released. ARC can I get an ARC? I really would love an ARC. Have you read Three Dark Crowns yet, please tell me what you thought of it!
