Next Steps for The Scripturient 101

2/9/2018

Hello, my Scripturients!
I am excited to announce a project that I have been contemplating starting for a few months now. I get urges like these every so often these urges were the same as the kind that created this blog so, since I trusted the urges then, I decided to trust them now.
So Katelyn what is this project?
Well, I need your help for it, in particular, I need my fellow writers.
I am launching my editing service. I will be working in the developmental editing business. If you don't know what this is, a developmental edit is an edit most of us do once we finish writing the draft. It is the process of going through and reading the manuscript finding plot holes, examining character development, the overall arc of your story. I believe that the developmental edit is much more important than the copy edit. GASP right? But in my head, you can have a book that is spotless, but if you have flat characters and a ton of plot holes, I am not going to want to read it.
I think we can all think of a story that we could just feel in our soul could have been better if someone else had just given it a small nudge in the right direction.
So what services will I be offering?
I will have four different services:
1. First Chapter Critique- $30
2. First 50 Pages- $75
3. Reader's Report- $.005 Per Word
4. Full Critique- $0.010 per word
Head on over to my editing page here for more details as to what each package has.
Katelyn when are you going to start offering editing services?
I am glad that you asked.  I am starting to take submissions today February 9th! That being said while I will be open for submissions I know based on my month I will not be able to start working on submissions until March 1st. So if you are looking into getting a project done quickly, please keep that in mind. If you would be interested in being some of my first clients, please fill out the contact form below and tell me about your project to see whether or not we would be a good fit.
I am really excited to begin this next step, and I hope you are excited to have another option in the sea of people out there. If you have any questions, you can fill out the contact form below or send me a message on Twitter at @scripturienting.
Love you all,
Katelyn

Hello Bookworms,
It is the end of another month which means its another month of new releases. So what are the top five new releases.

1. Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1) By Laini Taylor

Picture
Expected publication: March 28th 2017 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around-- and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

Traitor to the Throne (Rebel of the Sands #2)
by Alwyn Hamilton

Picture
Expected publication: March 7th 2017 by Viking Books for Young Readers

The sizzling, un-put-downable sequel to the bestselling Rebel of the Sands!

Mere months ago, gunslinger Amani al'Hiza fled her dead-end hometown on the back of a mythical horse with the mysterious foreigner Jin, seeking only her own freedom. Now she's fighting to liberate the entire desert nation of Miraji from a bloodthirsty sultan who slew his own father to capture the throne.

When Amani finds herself thrust into the epicenter of the regime—the Sultan's palace—she's determined to bring the tyrant down. Desperate to uncover the Sultan's secrets by spying on his court, she tries to forget that Jin disappeared just as she was getting closest to him, and that she's a prisoner of the enemy. But the longer she remains, the more she questions whether the Sultan is really the villain she's been told he is, and who’s the real traitor to her sun-bleached, magic-filled homeland.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Miraji, about the rebellion, about djinni and Jin and the Blue-Eyed Bandit. In Traitor to the Throne, the only certainty is that everything will change.

Blood Rose Rebellion (Blood Rose Rebellion #1)
by Rosalyn Eves

Picture
Expected publication: March 28th 2017 by Knopf Books for Young Readers

The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

A Crown of Wishes (The Star-Touched Queen #2)
by Roshani Chokshi

Picture
Expected publication: March 28th 2017 by St. Martin's Griffin

Gauri, the princess of Bharata, has been taken as a prisoner of war by her kingdom’s enemies. Faced with a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. Hope unexpectedly comes in the form of Vikram, the cunning prince of a neighboring land and her sworn enemy kingdom. Unsatisfied with becoming a mere puppet king, Vikram offers Gauri a chance to win back her kingdom in exchange for her battle prowess. Together, they’ll have to set aside their differences and team up to win the Tournament of Wishes—a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor.

Reaching the tournament is just the beginning. Once they arrive, danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans and mischievous story birds, a feast of fears and twisted fairy revels.

Every which way they turn new trials will test their wit and strength. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there’s nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

Picture
Hello Bookworms,
Today's post is a bit different then our normal #writingwednesday posts, but it is for a very special reason. I like to watch Youtube. Alot. I watch youtube more than netflix. While I don't always watch vlogs, I do enjoy also watching videos about books and writing, more so recently. One of these Youtubers, Vivien Reis, is also writing a book. I love watching her videos about writing and grammar, I know nerd. But her videos are so accessable. She explains things really well, so you don't feel like you are in a lecture. She is being smart andis taking her own advice doing pre-release marketing. Reis is going to be a self published author, and I for one am super excited for this release. If her videos have taught me anything it is that she is brilliant. I can't wait to see what she writes. So what does that cover look like?
Release date: Spring 2017 (date TBA)

Synopsis:A mysterious island. An ancient evil. A society determined to gain power.

Fifteen-year-old Abigail Cole and seventeen-year-old Benjamin Cole never thought one day could alter their lives forever. After a violent attack leaves their father in the hospital and their mother goes missing, both discover there’s more to their family history than mental illness.

But when Abi is abducted, she learns the attack wasn’t random. Thrust into an exotic and beautiful world part of a multi-millennial feud, Abi must decide who to trust in a society built on secrets. Enlisting the help of a boy connected to her in impossible ways, Abi uncovers a family secret stretching generations--a secret her abductors have also discovered.

With Abi gone, Ben tries his best to search for both his sister and his mother, but his hold on reality is fading. Something dark has latched onto him. Violent hallucinations and paranoia force him to believe he’s next in line for the family curse.

Set in a world of magic and fatal powers, failure can result in unthinkable damage. With the clock ticking, Abi and Ben must decide what’s right in time to save themselves and those they love.

When darkness is coming, who do you trust?

Okay tell me that doesn't look and sound great! And don't even deny it. We all judge a book by it's cover.

I Have to Go Back to School Tomorrow

1/18/2017

Hey Bookworms,
Tomorrow I have to go back to school. I haven't really packed anything yet... I'm kinda just avoiding my room at all costs if I'm totally honest. I get to distracted in there. Ironic that the place in my house that is mine, it the room I can't work productivly. It is most likely because it is so cold in there.

How about that quote? I love the things I find on pinterest.

Last week was a pretty good writing week. I read through some of my chapters and figured out where I needed to expand. When I originally started writing The Frituals it started out as a single POV story, before growing to the nine or so POVs it is now. So as I went through the draft again I found sections that were as little as 300 words long, just a summary of what it could be because I didn't know the character's voice yet. So I have started to rewrite those 12 chapters, 2 down, 10 to go. This should help to expand my word count closer to what it should be. Then I can go in and do a deeper edit.
Since I am not working in such a chronological order on the draft I will not be posting anymore chapters to wattpad for a time. So we will let those first three chapters stand as a preview to what is to come. Though they will probably change.

The next few weeks may see a change in my blogging schedule. I want to try to keep my three day a week schedule, but I know the first two weeks of school are going to be very busy so I don't want to promise anything. I might drop Friday's posts for the month of February and see how that goes.

I am prepping for the future though. It may seem early but I have written a very rough draft of a query letter for the Friutals, and have started to compile a list of agents, and what they require for submission so come summer I can get right to it.

What are you currently working on? Have something you think I would like to read?
Shoot me a message at

or email me scripturient101@gmail.com

Have a great #writingwednesday everyone!

2017 Goals and January TBR

1/6/2017

Picture
Hello Bookworms,
Well, 2016 has finally ended. It was a year of highs and lows for me, and many memories I won't ever forget, and will continue to influence me in the future. I am excited for 2017 and the prospects this year will bring. I have quite a few goals for this year and really want to focus on them and I hope you will join me on this journey.

Writing Goals for 2017

Picture

I did a crazy amount of writing this year. A crazy amount for me at least. I wrote three hundred pages of my own work, just for me, on top of being a full time student with two jobs. I want to continue that. This year I have several writing goals for this year.

My First Goal for 2017 is to edit The Five Fritual's, the book I am posting to Wattpad. ( https://www.wattpad.com/343665553-the-frituals-working-title-chapter-1-shauna ) to a publishable or semi- publishable level.

Goal 1.5 is to begin querying The Five Fritual's but that won't be until late 2017, if this doesn't happen until 2018 I wouldn't be upset.

My second writing goal is to finish The Fritual's Fatel (Working Title) This was the book I wrote for Nanowrio. I finished Nanowrimo, but if you have read some of my previous #writingwednesday posts I did not finish the story. So I want to finish that story, and maybe begin edit it.

My final writing goal goes in tandam with school. I will be done with college this December which is terrifying and liberating, knowing that this time next year I won't have to worry about school work. Maybe work work lol. But my goal is for my senior thesis. I have an idea already for what that will be, it will be a Novella as our limit is around 30 pages long, so my goal for this is to start this summer on it, and to have an A on it. This lowest grade I would "allow" myself to have would be a B+ so while my goal is an A I would I guess settle for a B+ on my senior thesis project.

My Reading Goals

My goal for reading this year is to read and listen to at least 60 books this year. I read 58 books I didn't quite reach my goal but I really think that I can make it to 60 books. Doing a review a week I will have to haha.
I would love to meet a few authors this year and interview them. I have at least one option to meet and author in May but that is up in the air. I am waiting as paitently as I can for that date.

Professional Goals

I would like to build this platform, I know it won't grow to a crazy amount right away but I would love to grow this bookworm family and maybe add some of you to a beta reading group that I would like to start for my work. So keep an eye out for that.

My second goal for the professional catagory is to do a really strong job at an intership I will be starting in Febuary for a small publishing company. I don't really know what to expect from it so it will be an adventure. Would you like to see some of that journey? Let me know.

My January TBR

With a new month comes a new TBR (To Be Read) List
1. Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
2. The Inquasition by Taran Mathuru
3. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
4. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
5. Conffessions of a Murder Suspect by James Patterson
