Hello and Welcome my Scripturients to another writing update.
If you are new here Hello! My name is Kayelyn Costello. I am the author of the Young Adult Fantasy novel The Frituals. This is the blog I started nearly two years ago for me post writing updates, book reviews and the occasional educational piece. We are headed into my favorite time of year. It is a combination of the holidays (happy Hallothankmas) and writing. This time every year for the past 8 years I have dedicated my November yo creativity. Through high school and college I dedicated myself to writing at least once a day with the goal of 1,667 words a day for 30 days. And this year will be no different.
For the past month or so I've been combing through my Nano document from 2016. From these plot lines I started to develop then I will write an additional 50k and finish the second book in my series, Rebellion.
A tip for Nanowrimo. Set clear goals. I am telling you all I am going to do this. Even though I am working every day, co directing my first play which comes out this month, and managing my author business. But by telling you all I am holding myself accountable. Tell people what you are doing. Have a public play you post word counts. You will be surprised by how invested people will get in your journey.
I will be doing weekly nanovlogs again this year over on my YouTube channel but I am also going to try to post blog posts here with number updates weekly. So today as of 12:03 Am my word count is 39,753 only 50,247 words to go.
I also have some news!
On November 15th 2018 I will be releasing to new versions of The Frituals! I plan on releasing a hardback of the first book! The Hardback will retail for $17 or $20 for signed. I have signed editions available for preorder on my website and there are copies for pre order on amazon.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE!

Starting on November 15th I will be holding a giveaway!!

Reviews are a huge part of the writing industry in that they help to promote our sales, so I want to educate the reading community on it! Keep an eye out for that content!

I want a way to give back to my community and educate people on the benefit of reviews.

Anyone who leaves a review on either amazon or goodreads will be entered into a contest for a signed hardback, and 6 chapters of Rebellion. This is an INTERNATIONAL giveaway.

Must be 18+ or with Parental approval

11-15-2018 - 12-15-2018

Post a photo on social media of you reading, your reading progress, whatever but mention the frituals and use #thefrituals

Leave a review on Goodreads and/ or Amazon.com

If you have already reviewed the book than you already have half your entry done! Just post a picture and use the hashtag and you are all set!

I'm really excited for the beginning of NaNoWriMo and the continued growth of The Frituals.
As always I love you and thanks. If you haven't yet please follow my social media links below and see what I am working on.

Kate

March Updates: Editing, and Some April Plans

3/30/2018

Hello my Scripturients,
March... March was the month that I told myself I was going to come forward full force for my blog and for my youtube channel... instead I fell off the face of the earth. I didn't read that much that month, I didn't really get to write or edit all that much, however I did have a really great month.  I have started the apartment hunting process with two of my favorite people, I have gotten another job which should make me a bit more moolla $$ and make it easier for me to meet my publishing goals... after I pay the bills.
This month I stepped into another management roll in the theater for my old high school and have a few new avenues coming up for me. So while I haven't been as productive as I wanted to, and I can't check the box for that goal I can check the box saying I took care of myself and felt genuinely happy. And I personally think that that is all that matters.

Picture
I do still have ideas for several videos that I was going to put out, and I still plan on putting those videos out. So you will see newer videos on my youtube. I am also going to be doing Camp NaNoWriMo again, and I will be doing weekly vlogs again this time around. I did want to work on a different project but I will be using it as a push to get my edits done. I am creating a cabin for it similar to what Kristen Martin and Vivien Reis did last year. We all have our own projects and goals but doing these little daily check-in's makes all the difference. It really holds you accountable. If you would like to join my cabin click HERE to go to my account and send me a message and I will add you! This has been open since Monday so I want to apologize in advance if you miss that chance, we could still do buddy messages.
So Katelyn how did your editing actually go for the month?
Wellllll.... I finished editing the physical proof
*wooooooo* *Insert crowd noises here*
Butttt I only transcribed three of those chapters. *Whomp whomp whomp* While it doesn't take me to long to find edits and write them into the book, it takes much, much longer to put those edits into the computer. Much longer than I anticipated. So if you again, if you wanna be able to yell at me if I don't edit join me for Camp Nanowrimo! I am going to try much, much harder to be more active, even with jobs and moving in two months.... HELP
Goal: Have book edited and in beta process by June 1st.
Make me do this people!

Love,
Katelyn

I Finished Editing My 2nd Draft WU#14

3/15/2017

Hello Bookworms,
How are you doing? I am currently snowed in, with a hyper puppy and some crazy siblings. However, I am happy to say that I made it through my second draft, as you could probably guess by the title. But after a long day of editing I made it through. I see a few things I need to think about before working on those chapters.
I didn't really add too many new words, I am still hovering just over 50k words, but it's okay. Maybe the next time around I will add more. For right now, I am not worried about it. For now I am going to print this new manuscript, get a bit cup of tea and really start preping for camp nanowrimo.
But in the meantimeI have started writing the second book as you know for nanowrimo and feel much better about the writing of the second book. I have to fix this. That is where you come in. I am looking for some beta readers! I would like some 8-10 freinds to help me with this writing project. If you are a person who:
1. likes to read fantasy YA
2.have done some prior beta reading or reviewing
3. Have strong but constructive opinions.
4. Are willing to answer questions about the text every few chapters
5. Are willing to engage in conversation about chapters after completing them.
6. "Everyone has the chance to choose to be good" Shauna Flynn tells her ex-fiancé after she has to run from her home. Shauna and her sister Taytra came of age this year, which means it is time for them to be tested to see if they are a fritual. A descendant of a powerful elf able to control the elements. When Shauna's powers are revealed, her home is attacked by the Dark One's, a sect of elves that don't want their magic tainted by the blood of man. When the Dark Ones attack, she is forced to flee, while her family is held, hostage. She must find the other four Frituals, so they can bring their powers together and stop the reign of terror the Dark One's Magic will bring on the land.
Currently resting just over 50k words
If this sounds interesting to you. Send me a message, and we can get in contact and discuss being one of my betas :)
*Note- this book has not yet been to an editor, it is in my plans but I wish to have plot and structure set in stone before paying to have changes made. If you have any grammar edits, I would love to hear them, but I am more looking for structure feedback right now.

The Elven Tales: The Company of the Rose By Fabi Ghittoni

3/13/2017

Picture
*I was sent a free Ebook for an honest review. Thank you to Fabi Ghittoni for this copy. This will not change my opinion on the book*

The Elven Tales: The Company of the Rose By Fabi Ghittoni
ebook, paperback, hardback
Published February 2nd 2017
Rating: Didn't finish I go to 72/251
Synopsis:

Prudence Clark lives a seemingly normal life in Cambridge with her best friend’s family. But a series of strange events compounded by a wave of kidnappings is about to turn everything she believed about her existence upside down.

A brutal attack catapults her into a new reality – one that makes her the most important refugee of the Council of the Five Kingdoms. Now, she’s charged with the task of finding the King’s runes to stop Alanel, the most malicious and ruthless being, following his escape from prison.

Alanel has declared war on the king of Arkana. Now, even more shocking truths come forth, exposing long-held secrets about Prudence’s past and her destiny. Her newfound knowledge will prompt her to embark on a treacherous journey to face dangerous beasts in the most inhospitable of places. But her journey will not be alone, she’ll be joined by the Company of the Rose, brave warriors that will fight by her side, and hopefully, lead to the retrieval of the runes before it’s too late.
My Thoughts:
I really tried with this book I did. But I couldn't get through it. I was given the book by Fabi Ghittoni on February 23, and I was really excited to read it. If you go to Ghittoni's instagram you see the beautiful cover everywhere. The cover design and interior design are amazing however I could not let that deter my opinion.

So this story made me think of Narnia with the transpatation back and forth between a magical realm and Cambridge. I feel like I would have really enjoyed this more if I had a better grounding in the world, however we only saw bare bones details, or what we did were so repetitive I wanted to snap my phone. I never want to see the words "High arching" or "Lofting ceilings" again. I found the redundencies to grate on my nerves so much I had to keep putting the book down.

One thing that I may have just grwn accustom to, but I found it hard to get past. There was no internal voice. I realize I only read 70 pages of the book, however, we only saw the charecter's thoughts once. Once! If you were transported to another world, and were told all these unbeliveable things you would be freaking out, nothing. The character really hated this character but she just said she did. I didn't really believe why they did? I never know what Prudance thought! It made it sooooo hard to get into it.

Of what I read I felt like if it had a lot more editing it would have been really good so sadly I had to give this one a low rating. I hope in the future we can see better work form Ghittoni.

Hello Bookworms,
How are you? I have been busy working and planning planning for Camp Nanowrimo. If you aren't sure what Camp Nanowrimo, it is run by the same people that doe Nanowrimo, but this time it is more flexible. Instead of doing 50k I will be able to choose my word count. I am not really sure what my word count will be yet, I am still working on outlining the end of The Fritual's Fatel. If you want to know a bit more about Camp Nanowrimo and Nanowrimo I did a video on youtube last week all about my Nano experience.(
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8O2lvaGdzc )
So what have I been doing to help my writing progress? I have been busy rereading all that I have written and edited, and am making a "reverse outline" of what I have written and plan to start a full outline this week. If you wanna know more about my outlining process you can look back in my posts from January where I discussed it breifly, or subscribe to my Youtube channel where this weeks video will be on creating an outline.
My writing goals this month:
  1.   Continue to Edit Book 1
  2. Outline End of Book 2
  3. Plan Camp Nanowrimo
  4. Create a writing cabin

Reading and Notes-Writing Update #11

2/22/2017

Hello Bookworms,
It has been almost three months since I started editing this Manuscript. It has been a real challenge to balance editing, school, and work. My current word count is 49,190. When we I started this editing journey The Frituals was about 40,000 so progress is being made.
My editing process over the last week has been reading ahead in my print binder, looking over the notes I have taken there and, making some more. Then going through and implement them.
I have definitely see now places where I had an idea for something and then changed it. Like a character's background story... yeah that changed lol. But now I get to see all the discrepancies  much closer together. Yesterday I took notes through page 100 in the printed manuscript... while I am back on page 77 in the actual editing and updates. So, we are going, Part one is out to a crit partner.
I have been drinking way to many coffee's.... send help. Editing world is scary.
But it is also really rewarding,
How is your writing project going?
Oh I launched a trial run of a youtube channel so if you wanna watch me haul some books head over to:

Picture
Hello Bookworms,
Today's post is a bit different then our normal #writingwednesday posts, but it is for a very special reason. I like to watch Youtube. Alot. I watch youtube more than netflix. While I don't always watch vlogs, I do enjoy also watching videos about books and writing, more so recently. One of these Youtubers, Vivien Reis, is also writing a book. I love watching her videos about writing and grammar, I know nerd. But her videos are so accessable. She explains things really well, so you don't feel like you are in a lecture. She is being smart andis taking her own advice doing pre-release marketing. Reis is going to be a self published author, and I for one am super excited for this release. If her videos have taught me anything it is that she is brilliant. I can't wait to see what she writes. So what does that cover look like?
Release date: Spring 2017 (date TBA)

Synopsis:A mysterious island. An ancient evil. A society determined to gain power.

Fifteen-year-old Abigail Cole and seventeen-year-old Benjamin Cole never thought one day could alter their lives forever. After a violent attack leaves their father in the hospital and their mother goes missing, both discover there’s more to their family history than mental illness.

But when Abi is abducted, she learns the attack wasn’t random. Thrust into an exotic and beautiful world part of a multi-millennial feud, Abi must decide who to trust in a society built on secrets. Enlisting the help of a boy connected to her in impossible ways, Abi uncovers a family secret stretching generations--a secret her abductors have also discovered.

With Abi gone, Ben tries his best to search for both his sister and his mother, but his hold on reality is fading. Something dark has latched onto him. Violent hallucinations and paranoia force him to believe he’s next in line for the family curse.

Set in a world of magic and fatal powers, failure can result in unthinkable damage. With the clock ticking, Abi and Ben must decide what’s right in time to save themselves and those they love.

When darkness is coming, who do you trust?

Okay tell me that doesn't look and sound great! And don't even deny it. We all judge a book by it's cover.

I Have to Go Back to School Tomorrow

1/18/2017

Picture
Hey Bookworms,
Tomorrow I have to go back to school. I haven't really packed anything yet... I'm kinda just avoiding my room at all costs if I'm totally honest. I get to distracted in there. Ironic that the place in my house that is mine, it the room I can't work productivly. It is most likely because it is so cold in there.

How about that quote? I love the things I find on pinterest.

Last week was a pretty good writing week. I read through some of my chapters and figured out where I needed to expand. When I originally started writing The Frituals it started out as a single POV story, before growing to the nine or so POVs it is now. So as I went through the draft again I found sections that were as little as 300 words long, just a summary of what it could be because I didn't know the character's voice yet. So I have started to rewrite those 12 chapters, 2 down, 10 to go. This should help to expand my word count closer to what it should be. Then I can go in and do a deeper edit.
Since I am not working in such a chronological order on the draft I will not be posting anymore chapters to wattpad for a time. So we will let those first three chapters stand as a preview to what is to come. Though they will probably change.

The next few weeks may see a change in my blogging schedule. I want to try to keep my three day a week schedule, but I know the first two weeks of school are going to be very busy so I don't want to promise anything. I might drop Friday's posts for the month of February and see how that goes.

I am prepping for the future though. It may seem early but I have written a very rough draft of a query letter for the Friutals, and have started to compile a list of agents, and what they require for submission so come summer I can get right to it.

What are you currently working on? Have something you think I would like to read?
Shoot me a message at
@scripturienting
or email me scripturient101@gmail.com

Have a great #writingwednesday everyone!

New Releases

1/13/2017

Hello Bookworms,
With the new year comes fresh starts and new books to read. January can be a fairly dreary month outside. Which makes it brilliant for reading! Here are some of the newest books coming out this January that you should get your hands on:

Carve the Mark By Veronica Roth

Picture
January 17 2017
On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not—their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates, and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world?

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuvhe, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive—no matter what the cost. When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive—or to destroy one another.

From what I have heard from ARC (Advanced Reading Copies) readers this is a pretty good book. I have also heard however the Trope of the Dark Skinned Villian is prevelent.... not so cool Veronica. Not cool. I don't want this to taint my thoughts of the book but in this turbulent time I fell that it is prudent to mention this possible racisim, whether it was on purpose or not.

Wayfarer (Passenger #2) By Alexandra Braken

Picture
January 3rd
All Etta Spencer wanted was to make her violin debut when she was thrust into a treacherous world where the struggle for power could alter history. After losing the one thing that would have allowed her to protect the Timeline, and the one person worth fighting for, Etta awakens alone in an unknown place and time, exposed to the threat of the two groups who would rather see her dead than succeed. When help arrives, it comes from the last person Etta ever expected—Julian Ironwood, the Grand Master’s heir who has long been presumed dead, and whose dangerous alliance with a man from Etta’s past could put them both at risk.

Meanwhile, Nicholas and Sophia are racing through time in order to locate Etta and the missing astrolabe with Ironwood travelers hot on their trail. They cross paths with a mercenary-for-hire, a cheeky girl named Li Min who quickly develops a flirtation with Sophia. But as the three of them attempt to evade their pursuers, Nicholas soon realizes that one of his companions may have ulterior motives.

As Etta and Nicholas fight to make their way back to one another, from Imperial Russia to the Vatican catacombs, time is rapidly shifting and changing into something unrecognizable… and might just run out on both of them.

I have heard nothing but good things about this book. But as I havn't read Passengers yet I can't really say anything besides it is on my TBR list for 2017

Fate of Perfection (Finding Paradise #1) K.F. Breene

Picture

January 1st 2017
In a corporate-controlled future where the ruling conglomerates genetically engineer their employees, Millicent Foster is the best of the best.

Physically perfect and exceptionally intelligent, Millicent is granted the uncommon privilege of breeding. But her daughter inherits more than superior genetics…little Marie has a rare ability that the world has never seen, and her conglomerate, Moxidone, will stop at nothing to have sole possession of the child.
Teamed with Ryker, the formidable master of security, Millicent must risk everything in a life-and-death struggle to tear her daughter away from the ruling force who wants to own them all. The odds are stacked against them, but Moxidone will learn that the pursuit of perfection comes at a perilous cost—and that love can’t be bought at any price.
